The New Immortals – a discussion with tea
Wednesday 24th September, 4pm to 6pm
Phoenix Brighton,
10 – 14 Waterloo Place, Brighton
A diverse and stimulating group of people came together for a discussion which I hoped would help me think about and develop my research for The New Immortals. I wanted us to think about how, in the light of technological and medical advances, we might live in a world where people could live well beyond an age we currently consider to be normal and what this could mean for our future and that of our children and grandchildren. The reward for attendees was that they should all be treated to a tea fit for a Superhero!
The afternoon included a presentation of excerpts from film, interview,  music and reading with contributions from some specialist thinkers including transhumanist philosopher Peter Brietbart, artist Murray Ballard and former GP and campaigner for voluntary euthanasia, Dr Michael Irwin. Our Chair and able facilitator was artist Susan Diab.
Superfoods for Superheroes

So what do Superheroes eat? While planning our Superheroes tea, I found that in fact they don’t each very much at all – maybe the odd burger or hotdog, pizzas for Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, or spinach for Popeye. This didn’t sound very appealing or life prolonging to me, so I thought that we should definitely introduce some Superfoods into our Superheroes’ tea. Superfoods are foods which are thought by some people to have special nutritional properties.

Many of us actively try to maintain a healthy lifestyle which includes eating a balanced diet in order to help prolong an active, healthy life. However, tea traditionally involves cake, and while our dietary intentions are good, who wouldn’t be disappointed if we only had raw fruits, nuts and seeds for a special tea… after all, we’re only human.
